BACKGROUND TO COMPASSION IS LOVE IN ACTION

Compassion centre is situated in Yawhima, the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana. Yawhima is positioned 7/8 miles  from Sunyani the capital of Brong Ahafo. The centre which is hundred miles from Kumasi can be reached by either air or by road.

Ghana as a whole and particuarly Yawhima community views this project as extremely important for its educational and socio-economic benefit, especially since the Brong Ahafo Region is the leading agricultural belt of the country.

The project will attract new invigorating attention and create employment opportunites in the community. Moreover, it will contribute towards building sustainable community initiatives that will benefit all Ghanaians.

Rev. Charlotte Kwarteng, who originally comes from old Tafo in the Eastern Region, founded the project in 1995.

Her vision and compassion led to setting up the project in a town with which she had no previous knowledge or connection.

Although most of the people here are Moslems, they did not consider the religious differences but warmly welcomed Rev. Minister Charlotte to help her embark on the project to supply the needs of their children, young people and the entire community.

Due to lack of parental guidance, support, education and poverty girls as young as 12 years leave community and in desperate need to provide for themselves and their families may turn to prostitution as their last resort.

The aim of the project is the help children and young people who has been abondoned or orphaned for number of reasons, including those whose parents have died prematurely through AIDS.

The Centre is based on 24-acre site, which was donated by Nana Yaw Kuma, one of the chiefs of Yawhima krom, a suburb of Sunyani and was launched and given its first national publicity on 16th July 2005 on Ghana Television.
